5 Things to Remember While Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

5 Things to Remember While Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Although laser hair removal is a straightforward procedure that quickly eliminates unwanted hair from your body, it's smart to prepare yourself for each visit to make it go as smoothly as possible. You can make sure this procedure is a truly comfortable experience with just a few moments of preparation. Here's five ways to ready yourself for your hair removal procedure.

Halt the Use of Skin Care Products

During your procedure, the laser equipment will beam a bright light deep into the follicle to target the root of the hair. Thick, lasting skin care products can block the passage of the light and disrupt the hair removal process. Furthermore, disrupting the natural oil balance on your skin can increase the risk of adverse reactions appearing during the hair removal treatment. As a result, it's wise to eliminate skin care products, with the exception of gentle cleansers, from your routine about a week before your first appointment.

Exfoliate Your Skin Gently

To properly target your follicles, technicians must trim back the hairs in your target area. The trimming process allows the laser equipment to properly hit each follicle to stop growth in its tracks. If some of your hairs are trapped beneath the first layer of skin, the laser equipment will likely miss those follicles altogether. You can gently exfoliate your skin using a sugar scrub or other mild abrasive to make sure all of the hairs are completely accessible.

Plan for a Day Off

Unless you've completed the laser removal process before, you cannot predict how your skin will react. Some people develop redness or irritation in the treatment area at the conclusion of the visit. The skin reactions may put a damper on your plans or even leave you heading back home for the night. As a result, you may just want to plan to take the day off or stay home the night after your appointment. While sitting at home, you may take a cool bath or shower to soothe irritation and reduce inflammation.

Prep for Laser Hair Removal

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Make sure you plan for possible mild skin irritation by wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your laser hair removal appointment. Light, airy cotton or polyester threads provide the gentlest touch against your treated skin. Rough jean or khaki material can chafe the surface of the skin, leading to burning or itching sensations.

Take an Anti-Inflammatory

About thirty minutes before your appointment, take an appropriate amount of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication for your height and weight. Make sure to eat a small amount of food before taking the medication to help it start working in a timely manner. Upon completion of the procedure, your technician will likely also place a cool cloth or ice pack on the treated area to quickly soothe your skin.

Taking the above preparation steps helps facilitate great results during the laser hair removal process. Proper preparation can even give you the best chance at lasting results from this type of hair removal.
