TCA Chemical Peel Can Restore Your Sun Damaged Skin

TCA Chemical Peel Can Restore Your Sun Damaged Skin

Are you considering a chemical peel skin treatment? Take a moment to learn more about it first – and about the great deal that Tate MediSpa is offering this fall.

What Does a Chemical Peel Do?

A chemical peel is a common cosmetic skin treatment that is used to treat a variety of skin flaws, many associated with aging skin. But what does a skin peel actually do?

Contrary to many first expectations, a skin peel doesn't simply burn off skin cells in one single treatment with your doctor. The truth is a little more complex. A chemical peel does begin with a visit to a skilled technician. A chemical layer containing strong acidic compounds is applied carefully to the skin. However, these compounds are suspended in such a way that they dissolve very slowly. No skin is immediately burned away.

Instead, over the next several days and up to two weeks afterward, the acid will slowly penetrate the skin, drying it out and causing it to peel away, a bit like a slow-acting sunburn. This slow peel gives your skin the opportunity to replace the layers with new, healthy skin layers. When done properly, this can treat a variety of skin flaws, especially fine lines and damage caused by long exposure to the sun. It's an ideal treatment to consider in the fall.

TCA and Types of Peels

Did you know that there are different types of skin peels based on your skin care goals? Some are comparatively simple procedures that use mild acids, while others are more serious treatments that remove several layers of skin at a time and can usually only be done once.

A TCA peel falls between those two extremes. TCA stands for trichloroacetic acid, an acid that has been used in chemical peels for decades because of its relative safety. It is related to good old-fashioned vinegar, which often puts patients at ease. While TCA peels have been replaced with laser treatments in many cases, they are still a popular option for many skin doctors as the effects are well-known and the treatment is usually less expensive for the patient.

TCA Peels Are Typically Less Expensive Than Other Options

What to Expect From the Process

Keep in mind that getting a skin peel is very similar to getting a second-degree burn. Usually you will need to spend a couple weeks moisturizing and prepping your skin before the chemical peel. After the peel, you will need to carefully clean your skin regularly, avoid the sun, moisturize often and change any dressing or ointment if necessary. Your own aftercare is very important when it comes to the results of the peel.
