Does Your Makeup Bag Need a Spring Clean?

Does Your Makeup Bag Need a Spring Clean?

Winter is finally over and spring is here! The warmer temperatures mean it's time to air out the house and do some spring cleaning. As you clean out your home or apartment, take a close look at your makeup bag to see if it needs some attention, too. Chances are that it needs a good scrub and that some of its contents will be outdated.

Most of us buy cosmetics without thinking about their potential to expire. We simply assume that we will use them in a reasonable amount of time and discard the empty plastic containers when we are done.

However, letting makeup sit in your makeup bag for years is not a good idea. Cosmetics will eventually harbor nasty germs and bacteria. These contaminants have the potential to sabotage the integrity of your skin. Let's take a look at how you can tell when it is time to trash your old makeup.

Mascara

Mascara requires a watchful eye as it has the potential to be heavily contaminated with bacteria. Consider what is involved in the application of mascara. The brush is taken out, applied and placed right back into the tube. This series of steps allows for bacteria to collect on the brush and spread to the interior of the tube as well as your face.

Exposure to such bacteria can result in pesky itches, redness and pinkeye. So don't use your mascara any longer than three months after you open it. Also, if you smell a scent similar to gasoline when you open your mascara, it is time to throw it away.

Eye Shadow

Eye shadow should be replaced every three to four months. Otherwise, its application might cause redness or irritation due to the transfer of bacteria to your skin.

Foundation

Most foundations are water-based, which makes them the perfect target for bacteria. Discard foundation six to 12 months after breaking its seal. Don't store it in moist or warm areas, as contact with such environments will only speed up the aging process.

Blush

Blush you can hang onto a little longer. You can get a solid year out of your favorite powder blush before it's time to toss it in the trash.

Concealer

Concealer typically lasts for one to two years. Liquid concealer should be thrown away after one year while stick and powder versions will keep for about two years. If you notice that your concealer's color is different from when you first opened it, that's a sign you should throw it out.

Face Powder

Certain face powders have water derived from botanical extracts. This water allows for the growth of bacteria if it is allowed to sit idly in the bathroom. If your face powder is more than a year and a half old, it is time to move on to a new one.
