Are Your Hands Giving Away Your Age?

Are Your Hands Giving Away Your Age?

Have you noticed that your hands are looking a little more lined or aged than usual? You certainly aren't alone! Worries over aging hands are very common, especially since it's one of the easiest parts of your body to notice.

Although skin issues or unexpected signs of aging may be easily apparent on your hands and upper arms, there are plenty of treatments available to help diminish them.

Why Hands Show Your Age

Think for a moment about everything your hands do and all that they are exposed to. Whether you are washing your hands, prepping food for dinner, doing laundry, mowing the lawn or playing in the park, your hands typically get a double dose of everything your skin experiences. It's not surprising, then, that your hands tend to age more quickly than the rest of your skin. That can become a little mortifying, especially when you have to shake hands and introduce yourself, serve others or interact with clients.

There are also biological reasons that explain why the skin on your hands may be especially at risk of aging. Your hands hold very little fat compared to the rest of your body, which also means there aren't many resources to repair or diminish any damage to the collagen and fibers in your hands. Even small amounts of damage tend to last longer and eventually lead to those telltale signs of aging — crinkly-soft texture and protruding veins. It also has an effect on those "liver spots" that can develop with age, often making them more prominent.

How to Keep Your Hands Looking Young

If you are worried about aging hands, there are plenty of steps you can take at home to keep them looking younger for longer. While you may occasionally moisturize your hands now, you should talk to your dermatologist about creams and moisturizers that will be more effective at healing and helping your hands. There are moisturizers out there that even help restore the appearance of your hands by stimulating new growth. This includes products like SyCream, Regeniskin, SkinMedica, and others.

Protect Your Hands: A little protection goes a long way if you know that something is going to be damaging to you rhands. Those rubber gloves really do help if you are working with harsh chemicals or tough soaps, so take a moment to put them on.

Making sure to use sunscreen on your hands really will make a difference as well, even if you are just doing a bit of gardening work.

Treatments for Your Hands

You also have a number of effective options for more professional hand treatment. This includes dermal filler options, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help reduce that "crepe" appearance that hands sometimes develop. You may also be interested in laser skin resurfacing, which can help reduce the appearance of spots and give your hands a more youthful appearance. A treatment that includes multiple approaches is often the most effective here.
