Top Nail Trends for Winter You Have to Try

Top Nail Trends for Winter You Have to Try

Want to be fashion-forward as well as gorgeous this season? “Nail it” by checking out the newest nail trends from top beauty experts, as well as looks designers have recently featured on the catwalk.

Mother Nature Meets Father Christmas

During the winter holidays, and beyond, nail polish shades inspired by nature are slated to be big. Cedar and clay will be the leading colors, rather than candy-cane red. And instead of “nude” lacquers, the new neutral is sharkskin gray. Feeling frosty? More than one polish company is offering ice blue, which is a great alternative to going the standard pastel route.

This winter, you’ll find several versions of dark pine on the market as an alternative to black. Mustard yellow is another new kid on the beauty block, evoking fields of yellow-flowered mustard plants for a warm but spicy look.

Going Luxe

Lacking jewels for holiday bashes? Nail shades provide a touch of opulence to your life. The upscale version of “nude” is cashmere. Look for versions with pearl pigments that add a subtle glimmer. If you’re feeling the need for some precious metals in your life, paint your nails with a gold sequin polish, which piles on the sparkle over a grown-up dark base.

Instead of basic bright red, turn to jewel tones like ruby. More subtle than a primary color, ruby red adds some richness to your winter palette.

Finally, be on the lookout for nail colors that evoke black leather, because these dark hues have a bit more shine and richness than their matte “goth” counterparts.

Winter Whimsy

Along with the actual nail polish colors you’ll find on the market, staying on trend means working a little eye-catching design into your nail game. The most basic way to this, especially if you’re not overly handy with that tiny bottle brush, is to paint different nails in alternating individual colors. Alternate between two hues, or go wild and sport your ten favorite colors!

In addition, don’t be shy about asking your favorite nail technician to get creative and even a bit 3D. This season’s runways have featured nails that sport faux feathers or fake fur, as well as “sculptures” -- acrylic figures and other shapes that extend from the nail in all kinds of eye-catching ways.

Fashion-forward divas are also getting graphic by combining nail polish colors to create effects ranging from color-blocked to marbled. The French manicure look has been turned up several notches, with runway models sporting nail tips that are in bold contrast to the rest of the nail, or in which the outer edges of the entire nail are outlined in a darker color than the interior.
