How to Get the Best Results After Your Facial Fillers Appointment

How to Get the Best Results After Your Facial Fillers Appointment

Facial fillers can help minimize or even eliminate wrinkles and lines. Although the procedure isn't complicated, preparation and aftercare can make a difference and may help prevent side effects or complications. Here's some advice on dermal filler aftercare from Tate MediSpa.

Prevention

It's always best to head off a problem rather than deal with it later. Before you come in for your appointment, plan ahead. You should avoid aspirin or herbal supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding or interact with the fillers (ginkgo, garlic, vitamin E and St. John's Wort, feverfew, ginseng and evening primrose oil) for two weeks before your planned treatment. Avoid ibuprofen and Naprosyn as well as alcohol for two days before the appointment. It's best if you can come in with a cleanly washed face and no makeup.

Avoid Extremes

Extremes of heat and cold can cause problems after a dermal filler injection (although a cool compress or ice bag on top of a washcloth next to the skin is OK and can be soothing). Stay out of hot tubs and saunas, don't go skiing or use a tanning lamp. Generally speaking, it's not a good idea to massage the treated areas, but ask your doctor to be sure. You can gently apply Arnica montana or other cream recommended by your doctor. Continue to avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory medication, which may increase the risk of bruising.

Daily Activities

While normal activities are fine, it's not a good idea to engage in vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours after the procedure. You need not limit your diet and can resume supplements and herbal preparations within a day or so. After the first 48 hours, you can wear makeup and sunscreen is recommended. You may gently remove your makeup as you normally would and apply lotions or creams to your face. However, if you've had lip filler, don't wear lipstick or lip balm for 24 hours.

Extended Aftercare

Although most of the aftercare issues for dermal fillers revolve around the first 24 to 48 hours, there are some other issues. Don't try to have other cosmetic facial treatments immediately after dermal filler injections. In particular, avoid having facials or a glycolic acid or AHA peel. Liquid nitrogen and laser treatments should also be avoided for at least 14 days. If you need laser resurfacing, you should wait until the dermal filler has disappeared from the skin.
