How to Maintain Your Skin Care Routines While Traveling

How to Maintain Your Skin Care Routines While Traveling

Traveling to a warm, sunny destination is exciting! It can melt away your stresses and promote rest and relaxation. However, there is also a downside to going on a vacation. A new climate and even the means of travel, especially when traveling by plane, can wreck total havoc on your skin. Thanks to the low levels of humidity in the pressurized cabin of a plane and the stress of traveling itself, flying can take a serious toll on your skin. The lack of moisture can cause everything from extreme dryness to oily breakouts. Instead of skin that looks relaxed and glowing, it looks dull and tired. To help you have the glowing skin you have while at home, here are a few tips to maintain your skin care routine while traveling.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Spend a few days beforehand preparing your skin, especially if you are flying or going to a dry climate. Gently exfoliate and apply a hydrating mask, even if you have oily skin the drying effects of travel can cause your skin to become dry and increase breakouts. The day before you are scheduled to leave, give your skin extra hydration from the inside by drinking extra water and eating fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants.

Make Sure Your Beauty Bag Stays With Your Carry-On

Pack a small, zip-lock bag with traveling essentials, including lip balm, moisturizer, a hydrating cleanser and hand sanitizer (remember to use a clear, flight approved bag for your beauty supplies). Midway through your flight, use a hydrating cleansing cloth to remove make-up and residue that can build-up on your skin during your flight. Apply and reapply your moisturizer throughout your flight to hydrate and protect your skin.

Don’t Forget to Pack and Use Your Sunscreen

It may seem ridiculous to apply sunscreen while you are on a plane, but that is one of the most important times to use it. The windows on an airplane don’t filter out the harmful UV rays, so it is essential that you apply a moisturizer with SPF. If you want to save time and space, consider using an all-in-one foundation and sunscreen over your moisturizer. Once you arrive at your destination (before stepping out of the airport), reapply your moisturizer and sunscreen.

Drink Lots of Water and Maintain a Healthy Diet

One of the most difficult parts of maintaining your skin care routine while on vacation is maintaining a healthy diet. Dehydration is the main culprit when it comes to skin problems, so make sure you drink lots of water throughout your trip. When having meals, choose foods that will help keep you hydrated, such as fresh fruits like grapefruit, strawberries and pineapple as well as plenty of vegetables, including tomatoes cucumbers, celery and green peppers. Alcohol will also dehydrate you, so avoid it and opt for a refreshing non-alcoholic umbrella beverage instead.

Whether you are planning a relaxing vacation or a business trip, remember to plan ahead. Pack your beauty bag with smaller versions of the skin care products you typically use at home. If you remember to protect your skin while traveling and during your getaway, not only will you have glowing skin in the vacation photos, but you will come home feeling and looking refreshed too!
