The Best Dermal Fillers for Your Face

The Best Dermal Fillers for Your Face

No two patients have the same concerns about their skin quality, which means that no two patients should be expected to use just one dermal filler. Whether you want to remove wrinkles, firm skin, lift eyebrows or improve your lips, various fillers provide different types of relief for facial issues. Unlike multi-stage treatments such as hair removal, any dermal filler will only take an hour to administer and will not require the patient to experience anything except a few small side effects afterward.

Juvéderm® XC

Juvederm XC is a filler that's marketed towards smaller lines rather than deeper wrinkles at the corner of the eyes and mouth. It's injected into the face and acts in the same manner as a sponge, sucking up fluid to tighten skin, leaving a plump appearance. It's one of the longer-lasting injections, which can provide support for as long as six months before the skin starts to sag. The Ultra XC can last twice as long and is also a common injection for increasing the size or firmness of lips. Both Juvederm fillers can be reversed if necessary with another solution.

Radiesse®

Radiesse is used strictly for facial wrinkles because it is too thick to be used safely in lips, although it can also be used for cheek bones. Rather than expanding and soaking up liquid, like other fillers, Radiesse will stimulate the production of new collagen in the body. Collagen is the main protein used to keep skin and muscle matter together, meaning that the injection will work to make your facial features younger while adding volume, rather than simply covering up any wrinkles. However, this difference means that it's not possible to reverse it surgically, as you could with a tightening injection. Radiesse will last about a year before it is necessary for a touch-up.

Unlike other fillers, Perlane® needs to be applied to a particular area since the solution will only soak up liquid in and around the injection site, rather than others which are designed to spread around a larger area.

Perlane®

Perlane can be used nearly anywhere on the face. It can be used for deeper wrinkles, for lips, for puffy or sagging eyes and for reducing fine lines. Since Perlane is a relatively thick solution, it's an excellent way to improve skin folds. Unlike other fillers, Perlane needs to be applied to a particular area since the solution will only soak up liquid in and around the injection site, rather than others which are designed to spread around a larger area. It is approved for six months by the FDA, although some patients report being able to go a year without needing a touch-up.

Restylane®

Also known as Restylane-L or Restylane Silk, this brand of dermal fillers is best for larger facial wrinkles that might not see many results from other fillers. It's an injection that absorbs water with smaller particles, making it particularly effective for lips. The manufacturer claims it can last as long as 18 months. Restylane is made by the same manufacturer as Perlane, but is much less thick and used for smaller fills.

Remember that everyone's skin type is different and that results and side effects may vary. Consult your doctor to learn about personalizing your treatment and to discuss your options further.
